New Mexicans have a unique opportunity to enjoy fishing without the need for a license this weekend, June 6-7, as part of the state’s Free Fishing Weekend. This initiative, announced by the New Mexico Department of Wildlife, coincides with National Boating and Fishing Week, aiming to promote outdoor activities and the joys of fishing.
Encouraging Outdoor Activities
State wildlife officials have temporarily suspended fishing license requirements for these two days, allowing residents and visitors alike to fish in public waters across New Mexico. However, participants must still adhere to all existing bag limits and fishing regulations to ensure sustainable practices.
Mike Sloane, Director of the New Mexico Department of Wildlife, emphasized the importance of this event, stating, “This is a wonderful opportunity for New Mexicans to learn how to fish and get outdoors. We’re encouraging everyone to attend a nearby event or visit their local lake to enjoy the excitement of fishing in our state’s great outdoors.”
Events Across the State
Several events are planned to enhance the experience for families and individuals. These include the sixth annual Outdoor Adventure Day at Liam Knight Pond in Corrales, a Children’s Fishing Derby at Monastery Lake in Pecos, Outdoor Adventure Day at Sugarite Canyon State Park’s Lake Maloya, and the third annual Kids Fish with a Cop event at Young Pond in Las Cruces. These events are designed to be family-friendly and educational, providing a perfect setting for both novice and experienced anglers.
Participants are encouraged to check local regulations and conditions before heading out to fish. For more information, including fishing locations, stocking reports, and trip-planning resources, anglers can visit the New Mexico Department of Wildlife’s website.
