French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu announced on Monday that the country’s health emergency response plan, ORSAN, will remain at its highest level in anticipation of a potential heatwave recurrence.
France’s weather agency reported that the extreme heat has diminished in most parts of the country, although temperatures are expected to rise again towards the end of the week.
Scientists have stated that the recent heatwave, which began on June 20, was the worst recorded in Europe, where the climate is changing faster than the global average.
According to the public health agency, France has recorded 1,000 excess deaths during the heatwave, with most of the deaths involving people aged 65 and older.
