A new private Christian school, Comenius Academy, is being proposed in Greenville, Wisconsin, with the goal of providing a high-level education with a Christian perspective. The school, which would accommodate 2000 students at full buildout, has already generated interest from some area families, but others have concerns about acceptance, accountability, and the use of taxpayer money.
Project Details
The project would be built in stages and is expected to cost more than $132 million, with funding coming from private donors. The land contract has been signed, but is pending rezoning by the village. Comenius Academy Co-Founder Bill Ryan stated that over 100 kids are already signed up for consideration when enrollment begins.
Some residents, such as Emily Tseffos, expressed concerns about the school’s participation in the voucher program, which uses public taxpayer dollars, but does not require the same level of accountability as public schools. Tom Hartfiel suggested that the school should consider alternative funding methods, such as building a foundation to provide scholarships for low-income students.
Community Response
The proposed school has sparked a debate among residents, with some supporting the idea of a private Christian school and others expressing concerns about the potential impact on the community. The project is expected to be completed in several stages, with the doors opening in September 2029, and the middle and high schools being completed by 2030.
