Fourth Florida senior dies from Vibrio vulnificus infection linked to oysters

The Florida Department of Health confirmed Thursday that a fourth resident of Broward County, aged between 75 and 79, has died after contracting the flesh‑eating bacterium Vibrio vulnificus. The death brings the state’s 2026 fatality total to five, underscoring the ongoing danger posed by this naturally occurring pathogen in warm, brackish waters.

How the infection spreads

Vibrio vulnificus is most commonly acquired by eating raw or undercooked shellfish, particularly oysters, or by exposing an open wound to contaminated seawater. The department’s website notes that Florida has reported 21 cases of the bacterium so far in 2026. While healthy individuals may experience only mild symptoms, the infection can become life‑threatening for people with weakened immune systems, liver disease, diabetes, or other pre‑existing conditions.

Recent trends and historical context

In the past decade, the years 2022 and 2024 saw some of the highest numbers of cases and deaths in the region. Florida recorded 19 deaths and 82 cases in 2024, and 17 deaths with 74 cases in 2022. The latest fatality follows earlier deaths in Bay, Palm Beach, and Marion counties.

Officials attribute the recent increase in cases partly to the lingering effects of hurricanes Helene and Ian, which left standing or flood‑water in several coastal counties. Such conditions create ideal environments for the bacterium to thrive, raising the risk of exposure for beachgoers and seafood consumers alike.

Health impact and warning signs

When Vibrio vulnificus enters the bloodstream, it is fatal about 50 % of the time, according to health officials. Symptoms can include fever, chills, low blood pressure (septic shock), and blistering skin lesions. In severe cases, wound infections may lead to tissue damage requiring amputation.

A recent study cited by the Florida health department found that individuals with certain pre‑existing medical conditions are 80 times more likely to develop bloodstream infections from the bacterium than healthy people. This stark disparity highlights the importance of caution for seniors and those with chronic illnesses.

Regional reports

Along the Gulf Coast, Louisiana has reported 15 cases and six deaths as of Sept. 9, with most infections linked to wound or seawater exposure. Texas typically sees an average of 33 cases per year, while Mississippi reported three cases as of August.

Preventive measures

Florida health officials urge residents to avoid consuming raw or undercooked oysters and to seek immediate medical attention if they develop symptoms after eating shellfish or exposing an open wound to seawater. Proper cooking of oysters to an internal temperature of 145 °F (63 °C) can kill the bacterium and greatly reduce risk.

Local health departments continue to monitor water quality and issue advisories when bacterial levels rise. Citizens are encouraged to stay informed through official health department channels and to practice safe seafood handling at home.

What families can do

Families with elderly members or individuals who have chronic health conditions should discuss these risks with their healthcare providers. Simple steps—such as ensuring wounds are covered before swimming and choosing cooked seafood—can protect vulnerable loved ones from this potentially deadly infection.
