A Northside therapist, Gabriela Garcia, has been providing free and low-cost counseling to Fort Worth families through her nonprofit, Dream Big – PSP. Garcia founded the organization in 2018 to address the lack of access to mental health services in her community.
Dream Big – PSP’s Mission
Garcia’s goal is to provide culturally sensitive counseling services to uninsured families in Tarrant County. Her team has provided over 800 counseling sessions to people across 22 ZIP codes last year. Garcia believes that by building healthier families, she is contributing to a healthier community.
Garcia’s approach to therapy is unique in that she incorporates understanding of patients’ ancient healing rituals, such as egg cleanses, which are rooted in Mexican tradition. She also offers bilingual services, which allows her clients to express their emotions more comfortably.
Community Outreach
In addition to individual counseling sessions, Garcia’s team hosts quarterly Mental Health Mondays tabling events at Casa Azul Coffee in Northside. These events aim to invite neighbors to learn about counseling in a non-invasive way. Garcia has partnered with local organizations, including the city of Fort Worth, Artes de la Rosa, and Challenge of Tarrant County, to reach more families.
Dee Lara O’Neal, project manager for the Historic Northside District’s Main Street pilot program, has seen firsthand the impact of Garcia’s work. O’Neal praises Garcia’s commitment to making counseling accessible to the community, which extends beyond the counseling room to include support for local students and teachers, youth camps, and volunteer work with organizations serving Fort Worth families.
