Fort Worth’s music community is facing a shrinking stage landscape as venues close, relocate, or rethink their weeknight programming. This has left many musicians scrambling to find places to perform and develop their craft.
Local Music Venues Struggle to Stay Afloat
According to the National Independent Venue Association’s 2025 State of Live report, nearly two-thirds of independent stages operated at a loss in 2024, despite contributing more than $86 billion to the nationwide economy. This financial pressure is being felt in Fort Worth, where venues like Lola’s and Twilite Lounge have closed, leaving musicians without a stage.
Denver Williams, who hosts the Wednesday night open mic at Gustos Burger Bar + More, knows the instability firsthand. He launched an open mic at Pouring Glory near South Main Street, but when the business closed, he had to find a new venue. Gustos has since hosted its open mic every Wednesday, providing one of the city’s few consistent weekly stages for aspiring performers and musicians.
However, finding willing venues is only the first challenge. Williams said that the key to a successful open mic is consistency, with performers and attendees needing to know that the event will happen every week, rain or shine.
Established Venues Also Face Uncertainty
Even established songwriter rooms, like The Post, are not immune to uncertainty. The venue relocated in 2024 and earlier this year, it paused its weekly songwriter night after attendance declined. The night has since resumed under a new host, but the pause underscored that established songwriter nights depend on enough musicians and listeners showing up every week.
Local singer-songwriter and former Magnolia Motor Lounge host David Tribble said the biggest challenge facing Fort Worth’s music community is the lack of places to perform. ‘There just aren’t that many places to play,’ he said. ‘That’s the reality.’ Magnolia Motor Lounge’s Tuesday songwriter night exists in part to create more opportunities in a shrinking ecosystem.
