Fort Wayne Parks & Recreation Unveils Free Family Activities for Early September

Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation is rolling out a series of free, family‑friendly events for the first week of September, giving residents plenty of opportunities to get outdoors, stay active, and connect with neighbors.

Bike rides and walking trails

On Tuesday, September 1, the department will host Trek the Trails at Buckner Park. The 6 p.m. ride is open to cyclists of all skill levels and will cover roughly 7‑9 miles through the park’s scenic paths.

Thursday, September 3, brings Tread the Trail, also at Buckner Park, beginning at 6 p.m. Participants may choose a one‑mile loop or a 5K route, with options for running, walking, or wheelchair use. Both events are free of charge.

Evening entertainment

Friday, September 4, the Riverfront will host a free outdoor screening of the family adventure film “Jumanji” at sunset on the Auer Lawn in Promenade Park. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs for a relaxed movie night under the stars.

Later that evening, Foellinger Theatre will present Ninja Kidz Live: Infinite Possibilities at Franke Park. Pre‑show activities start at 4:30 p.m., featuring arcade games, demonstrations, and interactive stations run by local organizations. The main performance begins at 6:30 p.m. and includes martial‑arts displays, gymnastics, games, and audience participation.

Riverfront cruises and market

The Sweet Breeze canal boat will run several short cruises from its dock at Promenade Park on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, offering 45‑ to 90‑minute trips for a leisurely view of the city’s waterways.

Wednesday, September 2, the Salomon Farmers’ Market will hold its final market of the season at Salomon Farm Park from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Shoppers can browse fresh produce, baked goods, honey, and artisan crafts from local vendors.

Youth programs and ongoing activities

Registration remains open for the free After‑School Youth Program at Jennings Recreation Center, Weisser Park Youth Center, and McMillen Park Youth Center. Starting September 14, the department will provide free bus transportation from select Fort Wayne Community Schools for registered participants.

The Riverfront Social Run Club meets every Thursday at 6 p.m. at Promenade Park, welcoming runners and walkers of all experience levels.

Arts and exhibitions

Visitors to the Foellinger‑Freimann Botanical Conservatory can explore the “Pueblo Garden: Styles of the Southwest” exhibit and Jeremy Stroup’s “Touching Grass” installation, both on view through November 15.

Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation encourages residents to follow the department and event organizers on social media for any weather‑related updates or schedule changes.
