Area teenagers are getting a rare inside look at the world of health care this summer, thanks to a collaboration between Mercy Fort Smith and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). The two institutions have teamed up to offer the MASH program — a two-week, immersive experience designed to introduce local teens to careers in medicine, nursing, and allied health fields.
The program gives young River Valley residents the chance to explore health care pathways up close, working alongside professionals and gaining firsthand exposure to what a career in medicine can look like. Initiatives like MASH are widely credited with sparking lasting interest in health care among students who might not otherwise see a clear path into the field.
The timing is fitting: Fort Smith is also welcoming a brand-new nursing education option. The AHCA School of Nursing recently announced an expansion with a new Fort Smith location, bringing additional training opportunities for those ready to pursue a nursing career right here in the community.
Together, these two developments paint an encouraging picture for health care workforce development in the River Valley — nurturing the next generation of caregivers from the classroom all the way to the clinic.
