Former Wyoming Cowboy Josh Davis Faces Cancer; Community Rallies Support

Former University of Wyoming basketball standout Josh Davis, a 6‑foot‑8 forward who helped the Cowboys win two Mountain West titles and an upset over Gonzaga in the 2002 NCAA Tournament, has been diagnosed with Mantle Cell Non‑Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. The disease currently has no cure, and Davis and his family are turning to the community for assistance.

Family Launches Fundraising Effort

In August 2026, Davis’ sister Beth Brewer‑Weber discovered swollen lymph nodes during a routine check‑up. Subsequent tests confirmed the blood cancer diagnosis. Brewer‑Weber created a GoFundMe page to raise $200,000, aiming to ease the financial strain on Davis’ wife Jessica and their three children—Avery (20), Addison (17) and Will (11). “Treatment begins with four rounds of in‑patient chemotherapy, which is very hard on the body and requires time to recover,” Brewer‑Weber wrote. “Additional testing and treatment will follow with the goal of putting the cancer into remission and keeping it in remission as long as possible.”

Local Support and Legacy

Former teammate and current UW men’s assistant coach Chris McMillian expressed confidence that the Wyoming faithful will rally around one of its own. “I’ve known Josh since I was 17,” McMillian said. “This hurts more than you know, but I know our community will step up.”

Davis, 46, played 119 games for the Cowboys, averaging 21.2 points per game. His double‑double performance—11 points and 14 rebounds—propelled Wyoming past Gonzaga in 2002, and his five blocks in the second‑round win over Arizona remain a highlight in Cowboys history. He was inducted into the UW Athletics Hall of Fame in 2013.

Beyond the Court

After a five‑season NBA career that included stints with Atlanta, Philadelphia, Milwaukee, Houston, Phoenix and Memphis, Davis turned to coaching and ministry. For the past 14 years he has served as the boys varsity assistant coach at Forge Christian High School in Arvada, Colorado, and his family is active at Faith Christian Academy.

Friends and former teammates describe Davis as a devoted husband, father, and community member. “Josh and Jessica pour their lives into their family, friends, and community,” Brewer‑Weber added. “Please help us give back and support them with your love, prayers, and donations.”

How to Contribute

Donations can be made directly through the GoFundMe page linked in the original article. Community members are encouraged to share the campaign, offer prayers, and provide any assistance they can to help the Davis family navigate this challenging time.
