Former Prisoner Turned Mayor and Pastor Attributes Success to Faith-Based Program

Jermaine Wilson, a former prisoner who has become a pastor and two-time mayor of Leavenworth, Kansas, attributes his transformation to a faith-based prison ministry. Wilson, who grew up in a family plagued by addiction and incarceration, found himself in prison at a young age due to robbery and drug-related offenses. It was during his second stint in a maximum-security prison that he realized the need to break the cycle of crime for his young son.

Wilson’s turning point came when he joined Prison Fellowship, a Christian ministry founded by Chuck Colson, a former Watergate figure. Through the yearlong Prison Fellowship Academy program, Wilson learned values such as accountability and integrity, which helped him reshape his life. He credits his faith in Christ as the catalyst for his personal transformation.

Faith and Family Transformation

While incarcerated, Wilson participated in the Angel Tree program, which allowed him to send Christmas gifts and notes to his son, helping to restore his relationship with his family. His then-girlfriend, Jessica, witnessed the positive changes in Wilson and later became a Christian herself. The couple married after his release.

Wilson’s story is a testament to the power of faith and redemption. He now serves as a mission ambassador for Prison Fellowship, sharing his journey to inspire others. The organization recently celebrated its 50th anniversary and received a federal designation recognizing its success in reducing recidivism rates among inmates.

Heather Rice-Minus, President and CEO of Prison Fellowship, highlighted the program’s impact, noting that graduates have a significantly lower likelihood of returning to prison. The program’s expansion is supported by the First Step Act, which was signed into law during President Donald Trump’s administration, allowing for more rehabilitative opportunities within the federal prison system.

Wilson’s journey from prisoner to community leader underscores the belief that no life is beyond redemption. He emphasizes that everyone has a story, and through faith, individuals can find new purpose and strength.
