Former NFL running back Chris Johnson has revealed his battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurodegenerative disorder. Johnson, 39, was diagnosed with the disease in 2025.
Johnson, who played for the Tennessee Titans, New York Jets, and Arizona Cardinals, was a three-time Pro Bowl selection and six-time 1,000-yard rusher. He set the still-standing NFL record for most yards from scrimmage in a season with 2,509 yards in 2009.
Johnson told ABC’s “Good Morning America” that he was diagnosed with sporadic ALS, which is the most common form of the disease. He is currently taking part in a clinical trial as part of his treatment.
Johnson’s wife, Brittany, said they initially thought his symptoms were related to his football career, but they soon realized it was something more serious. Johnson said the disease has progressed faster than he expected, and he is now using a speech-generating device to communicate.
Johnson decided to go public with his diagnosis to raise awareness about ALS and to let people know that he is still the same person despite his physical limitations. The Titans and Jets both released statements supporting Johnson and his family.
