Former Bosnian-Serb General Ratko Mladić Dies at 84 While Serving Life Sentence

Ratko Mladić, the former Bosnian‑Serb general who oversaw the 1995 Srebrenica massacre and the prolonged siege of Sarajevo, died on August 27, 2026 at the age of 84. The news was first reported by Serbian public broadcaster RTS and later confirmed by Reuters through Mladić’s own lawyer.

Conviction and imprisonment

In 2017, the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) found Mladić guilty of genocide, crimes against humanity, persecution, extermination, murder, terror, unlawful attacks on civilians and hostage‑taking. The tribunal described his actions as an “unimaginable savagery” and sentenced him to life imprisonment.

He has been serving his sentence at the United Nations Detention Unit in The Hague, Netherlands. Earlier this month, his legal team submitted a request for early release on humanitarian grounds, citing a rapid decline in his health. The request was denied, and Mladić passed away shortly thereafter.

Reactions and legacy

Human‑rights groups and survivors of the Bosnian war noted the death as the closing of a chapter in the pursuit of justice for the victims of ethnic cleansing in the early 1990s. The ICTY’s verdict remains a landmark in international law, reinforcing the principle that leaders who order mass atrocities will be held accountable.

While Mladić’s death ends his personal story, the broader effort to remember the victims and educate future generations about the horrors of the Balkan wars continues across Europe and the world.
