Floyd County health officials warn of rising West Nile‑positive mosquitoes

Floyd County health officials announced Tuesday that a total of eight mosquito pools have tested positive for West Nile Virus so far in 2026. The latest two positive samples were collected during routine testing the week of August 23 and reported by the Indiana Department of Health.

What residents need to know

West Nile Virus is transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes. Most people who contract the virus experience mild symptoms such as fever, headache and body aches, and recover fully. However, the disease can become serious—and in rare cases fatal—for older adults and those with weakened immune systems.

Protecting yourself and your family

County health officials are urging all Floyd County residents to take practical steps to avoid mosquito bites. The recommendations are straightforward and align with common sense personal‑responsibility values:

  • Apply EPA‑registered insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus whenever you will be outdoors.
  • Wear long‑sleeved shirts and long pants, especially during the early morning and evening hours when mosquitoes are most active.
  • Limit outdoor activities at dawn and dusk, or bring children and seniors indoors during those peak times.
  • Eliminate standing water around your home—bird baths, clogged gutters, flower pots and other containers can become breeding sites.

These simple measures not only protect individual health but also help the community reduce the overall mosquito population.

Why the increase matters

The rise to eight positive mosquito pools this season signals a higher level of viral activity in the area. While the county has not reported any human cases of West Nile Virus this year, the presence of the virus in local mosquito populations warrants vigilance. The Indiana Department of Health continues to monitor the situation and will issue updates if human cases are identified.

Community response

Local churches, neighborhood groups and schools have already begun sharing the health department’s guidance with families. Faith‑based organizations are emphasizing the biblical principle of caring for one’s neighbor by encouraging members to protect the vulnerable—especially seniors and those with compromised health.

By following the health department’s advice, Floyd County residents can safeguard their families, uphold the tradition of strong community stewardship, and demonstrate the liberty to make responsible choices for personal and public well‑being.
