Florida Woman Arrested After Assaulting ICE Agents in Fort Myers

Lee County authorities announced the arrest of Maria Del Carmen Negrete Raya, a 39‑year‑old Mexican illegal immigrant, on felony battery charges after she allegedly attacked U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents during an operation in Fort Myers on August 19, 2026.

Details of the incident

According to the investigation, ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations officers attempted to stop a vehicle registered to a non‑U.S. citizen. The occupants fled the scene, and Negrete Raya pursued the agents, charging toward their vehicle and attempting to climb inside. She then allegedly struck an officer in the groin with a punch and delivered several kicks, causing minor injuries.

ICE agents elected to disengage in order to de‑escalate the confrontation, allowing law‑enforcement backup to arrive. The Florida Highway Patrol’s Bureau of Criminal Investigations and Intelligence, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, and the Office of Statewide Prosecution all participated in the follow‑up investigation.

Legal consequences

Negrete Raya was booked on three counts of battery on a law‑enforcement officer. Under Florida law, those counts may be reclassified as second‑degree felonies because of her status as an illegal immigrant, exposing her to a potential sentence of up to 15 years in state prison for each count.

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier issued a statement emphasizing the state’s zero‑tolerance stance toward anyone who attacks law‑enforcement officers, especially those who are present in the country without admission or parole. “Our federal partners are here to enforce the law and defend America’s sovereignty. Those who assault them will face the full weight of the law,” he said.

Background on the suspect

Negrete Raya entered the United States without inspection and filed an asylum application in 2023. She is currently subject to removal proceedings as an individual present in the country without admission or parole.

The case underscores ongoing cooperation between state and federal agencies to protect public safety and uphold immigration laws in Florida. It also highlights the legal ramifications that illegal immigrants face when they engage in violent conduct against law‑enforcement officers.

Community response

Local officials praised the coordinated effort that led to the arrest, noting that swift action helps maintain order and deters future assaults on officers. The incident serves as a reminder to residents that illegal activity, especially violent acts against those tasked with protecting the community, will be met with firm legal consequences.
