Dallas Asian American Film Festival sells out debut, showcasing local filmmakers

The inaugural Dallas Asian American Film Festival (DAAFF) sold out before its opening night at the Dallas Museum of Art, a milestone organizers say reflects a strong local demand for independent cinema rooted in the experiences of Asian American Texans.

Local focus and community support

Founded by the Dallas Asian American Art Collective, the festival features ten short films and one feature documentary, with a clear emphasis on Texas‑based creators. About 70% of the lineup was produced by Texas filmmakers, and half of the selected works come from North Texas artists. Festival Director Christina Hahn said the response “exceeds expectations” and proves that Dallas audiences are eager to support indie film and diverse storytelling.

“We’re pushing against the idea that Dallas has no culture,” Hahn explained. “Completely selling out our festival proves that Dallas has an appetite for indie film, for Asian American and Asian Texan‑made stories.”

Distinct from long‑running Asian Film Festival of Dallas

Unlike the long‑running Asian Film Festival of Dallas, which primarily showcases international Asian cinema, DAAFF was created with a hyper‑local focus, highlighting works made by Asian American filmmakers, particularly those with ties to Texas. The all‑Asian American leadership team is based in North Texas, reinforcing the festival’s community‑driven mission.

Featured filmmakers

Among the debuting works is Dallas‑based director Huzaifa Ejaz’s short film Phir Milain Gey, which follows three elderly sisters waiting in purgatory to be reunited with a younger sibling. Inspired by conversations with her mother about grief, family bonds, and Islamic beliefs about the afterlife, Ejaz said the film is “a love letter to my loved ones” and celebrates a South Asian story told through an entirely female cast.

Dallas filmmaker Uday Narayanan will present the comic satire The Criminal, about an indestructible 2007 Honda Civic battling the United States government. Narayanan believes the festival highlights the variety of stories Asian American creators are producing.

Arab American director Kais Marz will screen Marsupial, following an aspiring screenwriter balancing artistic ambition and personal relationships. Marz noted that the festival sends a message that under‑represented filmmakers can find a home in a broader Asian American context.

Experimental and educational components

University of Texas at Dallas professor and Korean American artist Laura Hyunjhee Kim will present Sky’s Edge, an experimental mixed‑media work inspired by Korean literary traditions and contemporary digital culture. The festival also includes a free public video workshop hosted by Pegasus Media Project at the Crow Museum of Asian Art, with tickets still available.

Looking ahead

Organizers hope the sold‑out debut signals lasting demand for a festival dedicated to Asian American filmmakers in Texas and the beginning of a cultural institution that celebrates stories created in North Texas. “North Texas has shown that we have more adventurous tastes than we let on,” Hahn said. “The artists and organizers of color are jointly building Dallas’ culture.”
