A routine morning patrol at Long Key State Park ended in a federal investigation Sunday after a park ranger discovered a suspected package of smuggled narcotics washed up on the shoreline.
Investigation Underway
The discovery occurred at approximately 7 a.m. on July 5, 2026. According to official reports, the park ranger spotted a brick-like bundle wrapped tightly in a manner consistent with previously intercepted maritime drug smuggling packages.
Upon closer inspection, authorities noted that the exterior of the tightly sealed bundle featured a prominent graphic image of a lion. Monroe County officials weighed the recovered contraband, which registered at approximately 1.44 kilograms (roughly 3.2 pounds).
Because the contraband appears to have originated from international waters or an offshore drop, the package was immediately turned over to the U.S. Border Patrol. Federal agents have taken custody of the substance and are currently conducting the ongoing investigation to determine the exact chemical composition of its contents and trace its origin.
No suspects have been identified at this time.
