Florida primary day: GOP governor race, new congressional map and key House contests

Florida’s primary election on Tuesday will determine the Republican nominee to succeed term‑limited Governor Ron DeSantis and will be the first vote cast under a new congressional map drawn by DeSantis himself. The map, designed to add four Republican‑leaning seats, reshapes down‑ballot contests across the state.

Gubernatorial primary

Naples‑area Rep. Byron Donalds, who carries former President Donald Trump’s endorsement, is the frontrunner in the GOP gubernatorial primary. Governor DeSantis has not publicly backed any candidate, though he reportedly shared concerns about Donalds with Trump. The field also includes Lt. Gov. Jay Collins, who emphasizes protecting the DeSantis legacy, former state House Speaker Paul Renner, and James Fishback, a 31‑year‑old candidate who has attacked Donalds with inflammatory language.

Democrats are expected to nominate former Rep. David Jolly, a party‑switcher who left the GOP in 2018 and criticized Trump. Jolly’s candidacy adds a rare Democratic challenge in a race that has been reliably Republican for three decades.

House races under the new map

The new congressional districts have sparked a scramble among incumbents and newcomers. In the 19th District, Rep. Byron Donalds vacates his seat, opening a crowded field that includes former North Carolina Rep. Madison Cawthorn, former New York Rep. Chris Collins, former Illinois state senator Jim Oberweis, and Trump‑endorsed Catalina Lauf.

Other notable House contests feature Rep. Cory Mills, who faces a primary challenge from former news anchor Ryan Elijah and two other candidates. Mills, under investigation by the House Ethics Committee for possible campaign‑finance violations, a revenge‑porn threat allegation, and an assault claim, has been endorsed by Rep. Anna Paulina Luna and Rep. Mike Haridopolos.

In the 6th District, Rep. Randy Fine, a vocal supporter of Israel, confronts social‑media personality Dan Bilzerian, who has launched an openly antisemitic campaign against him. The race highlights the heightened rhetoric surrounding foreign‑policy positions.

Senate primary

The Republican Senate primary pits retired Army Lt. Col. Alex Vindman, a key witness in the first impeachment inquiry, against state Rep. Angie Nixon, a democratic socialist who advocates ending U.S. military aid to Israel. The outcome will shape the party’s stance on foreign‑policy issues heading into the general election.

Implications for Florida’s political landscape

While Republicans have won every gubernatorial race in Florida for the past 30 years, a weaker showing by Donalds could signal an opening for Democrats, who came close to winning the governor’s office in 2018. The new map, combined with demographic shifts—including growing Hispanic support for the GOP and an influx of conservative residents—has moved the state further rightward, but Democrats hope to leverage any vulnerabilities.

Florida’s primary day also includes races in Alaska and Wyoming, and a special election in California’s 14th District, but the focus remains on how the Sunshine State’s voters shape the next generation of state and federal leaders.
