A 27-year-old Florida man, Kevin Argenis Millares, was arrested in New York after a multi-state manhunt for shooting a 70-year-old woman at a bus stop in Orlando’s Azalea Park neighborhood.
Shooting Details
The shooting took place on June 8 in the 1000 block of Egan Drive, near Hager Way. The victim was on her regular daily walk when she noticed a stranger walking toward her. She turned away from him near a local bus stop, which is when the man shot her three times in the back.
The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition and taken immediately into surgery. She later told deputies she did not know the man and had absolutely no idea why he targeted her.
Investigation and Arrest
Orange County detectives quickly gathered home surveillance footage from multiple properties in the area to track the suspect’s movements. During a canvas of nearby Faber Drive, investigators showed the footage to local residents. A homeowner and a real estate agent connected to a property there independently identified the man in the video as Millares, who lived at 800 Faber Drive.
An Orange County SWAT team served a search warrant at Millares’ home, but he had already fled the area. Inside the house, investigators found a loaded Hornady .380 magazine and a box of matching ammunition in the kitchen. The ammunition matched the three spent shell casings recovered by forensic teams at the shooting scene.
With Millares gone from the state, federal authorities were called in to assist. The U.S. Marshals Service successfully tracked Millares down in New York and took him into custody without further incident. He faces a charge of attempted first-degree murder and remains jailed in New York while Florida officials finalize his extradition paperwork to bring him back to Orange County for trial.
