The Florida Republican Party has joined the Republican National Committee in filing a legal motion to intervene as defendants in a federal court case over the state’s voter registration requirements.
Defending Election Integrity
The motion, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida, seeks to defend Florida’s documentary proof-of-citizenship law, House Bill 991, also known as the Florida SAVE Act. This law requires individuals registering to vote to present official documentation proving their U.S. citizenship.
According to filings by the Florida GOP and the RNC, the rules are necessary to preserve election integrity, clear inaccurate records from voter rolls, and verify that only eligible citizens cast ballots in state elections.
“Florida’s SAVE Act is a commonsense law that helps ensure only eligible U.S. citizens are registering to vote,” said Florida GOP Chairman Evan Power. “Floridians deserve confidence that every legal vote is counted and that our elections are protected from unlawful voting. The Florida GOP is proud to stand alongside the RNC in defending this law and will continue fighting to protect the integrity of our elections and the rights of every eligible voter.”
