A 6.1 magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of Cuba on Monday, with the U.S. Geological Survey reporting the major earthquake happened about 62 miles west of Mantua, Cuba. The earthquake was felt in central Florida, including in office buildings and theme parks.
Local Impact
Thousands of people across Florida reported feeling shaking just after 2 p.m., including people at Disney World. The Lake County government offices were closed as a precaution. Several buildings were also evacuated in Miami, including the Miami-Dade Steven P. Clark Government Center.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake was a shallow one, about 16 miles below the surface, and there is no tsunami threat at this time. The earthquake is considered the strongest near Florida on record.
Witness Accounts
Darius, a resident of downtown Orlando, described feeling the earthquake. ‘At first, it was just a little rumble. I didn’t think it was anything too much, but I was shocked to know that it was an earthquake,’ he said. Darius checked his apartment and found that his couch was swaying, but there was no damage.
Seaworld’s app showed that several rides were closed, including the Sky Tower and Penguin Trek. However, it is unclear if the closures were due to the earthquake.
