Federal and state transportation officials gathered in Sanford to break ground on a massive expansion of truck parking along Interstate 4, a major move aimed at tackling a critical shortage of safe rest areas in Central Florida.
Project Details
The $180 million federal INFRA grant will add 917 new parking spaces across five different sites along the I-4 corridor, which serves as a vital logistics artery for the region, carrying roughly 95% of Florida’s consumer goods.
According to federal data, about 40% of truck drivers spend over an hour every single day looking for a spot to pull over and rest, frequently forcing them to park on highway shoulders or off-ramps, creating safety hazards and costing the national economy billions of dollars in wasted time.
“Truck drivers shouldn’t have to choose between following the law and finding a safe place to park,” Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administrator Derek D. Barrs said.
Construction Timeline
The infrastructure upgrades are rolling out in two main phases, with construction kicking off this summer on the first three parking sites, located in Seminole and Volusia counties, and a target completion date set for mid-2027.
