Flagler County – A tragic traffic collision early Saturday claimed the life of a 57‑year‑old Bunnell resident when his pickup truck left the roadway, hit a tree and rolled on U.S. 1 near Education Way. The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) confirmed the driver was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
Details of the crash
According to FHP, the incident occurred at approximately 12:04 a.m. The pickup was traveling southbound when it drifted into the center median and a ditch. The driver managed to steer the vehicle back onto the highway, but the maneuver caused the truck to rotate, cross both southbound lanes and end up on the right shoulder.
While on the shoulder, the driver’s side of the pickup struck a tree. First‑responders pronounced the driver dead at the scene. The victim’s name has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
Investigation underway
The crash remains under active investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol. Officers are reviewing dash‑cam footage, vehicle condition and road‑way factors to determine why the vehicle left the travel lane.
