A musty odor coming from your car’s air conditioner is often caused by moisture trapped inside the climate-control system. According to Consumer Reports, the culprit is often moisture trapped inside the air-conditioning system. Experts said condensation naturally forms on the evaporator whenever the AC is running. While most of that water drains underneath the vehicle, some can remain inside the evaporator housing, creating the perfect environment for mold and bacteria.
Simple Solution
Consumer Reports recommends an inexpensive solution before scheduling a repair. Start the vehicle, set the interior fan on a low setting, and open the windows. Then spray a disinfectant into the fresh-air intake, also known as the plenum, located at the base of the windshield near the wipers. The ventilation system will pull the cleaner through the ductwork to help eliminate odor-causing bacteria.
Drivers should also remove or replace the cabin air filter before cleaning, as a dirty filter can restrict airflow and contribute to lingering smells. To help prevent future odors, experts recommend turning off the air conditioner a few minutes before reaching your destination while allowing the fan to continue running. This helps dry out the evaporator and reduces moisture buildup.
