EL PASO, Texas – On Oct. 25, deputies from the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office (EPCSO) responded to the El Paso County Jail Annex on Montana Avenue to investigate an alleged assault that occurred inside a cell block. The cell block consists of four rooms, each housing six inmates.
Investigation details
Surveillance footage from the housing unit showed five inmates entering a cell, with one inmate deliberately blocking officers’ view into the interior. After reviewing the video, deputies interviewed the victim at a nearby hospital. The victim described the incident as a “one‑on‑one” fight and presented bruises and injuries to his face, head, and eyes.
EPCSO indicated the assault may be linked to internal gang discipline, though the investigation remains ongoing. Although the victim chose not to pursue criminal charges, the sheriff’s office continued its inquiry.
Charges filed
On Tuesday, EPCSO obtained warrants for the five inmates identified as participants in the incident. Each suspect faces an additional charge of engaging in organized criminal activity, classified as a state jail felony.
The individuals named in the warrants have not been publicly identified, and their court dates have not yet been set.
Related law‑enforcement actions
Earlier reporting by ABC‑7 noted that one of the suspects, identified only as Ontiveros, was previously arrested and accused of murder in a separate case involving a body discovered in Socorro. Ontiveros allegedly triggered a SWAT response while attempting to evade capture and is scheduled for a jury trial in March 2027.
The sheriff’s office emphasized its commitment to maintaining safety and order within the jail facility, stating that any involvement in organized criminal activity will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
Community impact
Local residents and families of inmates have expressed concern about safety within the county jail system. EPCSO officials have reiterated that they are reviewing security protocols and will consider additional measures to prevent future incidents.
The investigation remains active, and further updates will be provided as the case progresses.
