A recent survey by mental health provider AMFM found that Fish Creek, Wisconsin, is one of the most stressful tourist towns in the country. The poll of 3,042 residents of traditional tourist towns ranked Fish Creek 117th in the US and third in Wisconsin.
Survey Findings
The survey found that the pressure of living in a tourist town can affect people’s stress levels, mood, and sense of control over their own community. In Fish Creek, the stress may come from crowded roads, packed restaurants, and busy trails. For residents, the emotional toll may show up as social fatigue, avoidance of village centers, and a protective feeling toward the peninsula.
Other Wisconsin towns, such as Wisconsin Dells and Lake Geneva, also ranked high in the survey. Wisconsin Dells was ranked as the most stressed town in Wisconsin, while Lake Geneva came in third. Nationally, Charleston, South Carolina, was ranked as the most stressful tourist town, followed by Destin, Florida, and Hanalei, Hawaii.
The survey also found that 23% of residents polled often feel ‘crowded out’ by visitors during peak tourism season. However, many residents recognize the economic benefits of tourism, with almost a quarter saying they definitely outweigh the stress caused.
