First Avenue North Bridge Closed for Two Weeks for Repainting

City officials announced that the First Avenue North bridge at 35th Street will be closed for roughly two weeks while crews repaint the bridge’s underside. The work, part of the city’s ongoing effort to preserve Birmingham’s transportation infrastructure, is intended to extend the bridge’s lifespan and keep the roadway safe for motorists and transit riders.

Detours and traffic impacts

Detour signs have been installed to guide drivers to alternate routes. While the city expects some traffic delays during the closure, officials urged commuters to plan ahead and allow extra travel time. The temporary detour will route vehicles onto nearby streets, helping to keep traffic flowing despite the reduced capacity on First Avenue North.

Changes to MAX BRT service

The repainting project also affects the MAX Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system. The platform on First Avenue North at 34th Street, which serves passengers traveling toward Woodlawn Station, will be closed for the duration of the work. Riders can use a temporary stop that has been set up about a block away on 35th Street, just beyond the intersection of First Avenue North and before the alley between First and Second Avenues North. Service heading toward the CrossPlex will continue uninterrupted.

Why the project matters

According to a city statement, repainting the bridge’s underside helps protect the structure from corrosion and wear caused by weather and traffic. By addressing these issues now, the city aims to avoid more costly repairs or replacements in the future, ensuring that Birmingham’s road network remains reliable for residents, businesses, and visitors.

What residents can do

Motorists and transit riders are encouraged to stay informed through the city’s official channels, including the Birmingham website and local news outlets. Checking real‑time traffic updates and planning alternate routes can reduce frustration during the closure. The city will monitor the project’s progress and provide updates if any changes to the schedule occur.

Looking ahead

Once the repainting is complete, the bridge will return to normal operation, offering a smoother, better‑maintained crossing for daily commuters. The city’s proactive maintenance approach reflects its commitment to preserving essential infrastructure while minimizing disruption to the community.
