Fire danger remains high in Carthage as Texas A&M Forest Service positions equipment

Hot, dry weather continues to drive fire danger across the ArkLaTex region, and Carthage, Texas, is at the center of the latest preparedness efforts. On Thursday morning, meteorologist Brian Fowler of KTBS MEGA 3 reported from the city alongside Andy McCarty of the Texas A&M Forest Service to discuss the current risk factors and safety steps for local families.

Current conditions and fire risk

Temperatures remain well above seasonal averages, and low humidity keeps vegetation exceptionally dry. These conditions create an environment where a single spark can quickly develop into a larger blaze. The Texas A&M Forest Service has classified the fire danger level as high for the entire ArkLaTex area, which includes portions of East Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana.

Forest Service response

To address the heightened threat, the Forest Service has deployed six fire engines and two bulldozers to a staging area just outside Carthage. Crews and equipment are on standby to respond immediately if a fire ignites. The presence of bulldozers provides additional capability to create firebreaks and clear vegetation that could otherwise feed a wildfire.

What residents can do

Local emergency managers are urging all residents to obey existing burn bans and to exercise extreme caution when using outdoor equipment such as lawn mowers, chainsaws, or grills. They recommend keeping fire extinguishers nearby, fully refueling vehicles before heading into the field, and never discarding cigarettes or matches on the ground.

In addition to personal precautions, officials ask anyone who spots smoke or a growing fire to call 911 immediately. Prompt reporting can give responders the critical minutes they need to contain a blaze before it spreads.

Forecast outlook

The extended forecast shows only a slight chance of rain later in the week, with most models indicating continued dry conditions through the weekend. While a brief shower could provide some relief, experts caution that the overall fire risk will likely remain elevated until a more sustained wet period arrives.

Community resources

Residents can stay informed through local news outlets, the Texas A&M Forest Service website, and the Carthage Emergency Management Office’s social media channels. These sources will provide updates on any changes to burn bans, weather alerts, and the status of fire‑fighting resources.

By staying vigilant and following safety guidelines, Carthage families can help protect their homes, neighborhoods, and the natural beauty of the surrounding woods.
