Final Witnesses to Testify in Lindsay Clancy Murder Trial in Plymouth, Mass.

Plymouth, Massachusetts – After nearly a month of testimony, the murder trial of Lindsay Clancy is set to hear its final expert witnesses. The case centers on whether Clancy, a former labor‑and‑delivery nurse, was suffering from acute postpartum psychosis when she strangled her three young children in January 2023.

Prosecutors’ Expert Testimony

On Tuesday, prosecutors will call a forensic psychologist hired to evaluate Clancy’s psychiatric history. The specialist is expected to assess the defense’s claim that an acute postpartum psychosis—a rare mental illness that can follow childbirth—impacted Clancy’s ability to discern right from wrong.

Defense’s Challenge

Earlier in the trial, the defense presented medical experts who argued that Clancy’s mental state absolved her of criminal responsibility. Those experts testified that she had lost touch with reality, hearing a voice that urged her to kill her children to spare them suffering.

Prosecutor Kirk Heilbrun testified on Monday, stating he believes Clancy killed her children so they would not “suffer” after she took her own life. Heilbrun said he does not accept the notion that Clancy was hallucinating a command to commit the murders.

Upcoming Cross‑Examination

Clancy’s attorney, Kevin Reddington, will have the opportunity to cross‑examine Heilbrun on Tuesday. Following that, prosecutors are expected to call at least one more expert witness before the trial moves toward closing arguments, likely no earlier than Wednesday.

Background of the Case

Clancy, 36, pleaded not guilty to the murder charges stemming from the deaths of her children—Callan (8 months), Dawson (2 years) and Cora (5 years). In the months leading up to the killings, she sought mental‑health treatment from multiple providers and admitted herself to a psychiatric hospital.

After the children’s deaths, Clancy jumped from a second‑floor window and remains paralyzed from the waist down. Prosecutors allege she planned the killings and manipulated her husband into leaving the house by sending him to fetch medicine for one of the children and dinner for the family.

Legal Implications

The trial raises significant questions about parental‑rights, mental‑health defenses, and the extent to which a defendant’s psychiatric condition can mitigate criminal liability. While the case is being heard in a state court, its outcome may influence how similar defenses are evaluated in other jurisdictions.
