Fiestas Patrias kicks off Hispanic Heritage Month on OKC’s south side

Oklahoma City residents gathered on the south side Tuesday evening for the launch of Hispanic Heritage Month, marked by the annual Fiestas Patrias celebration. The event, now in its 16th year, has grown from a modest fair‑ground showcase to the city’s largest gathering of Latin American culture, music and cuisine.

Family‑focused festivities

Organizers set up stages, food stalls and activity zones near Santa Fe South Elementary School, creating a safe, walk‑able environment for families of all ages. Children can enjoy dance workshops, arts‑and‑craft stations, and games while parents sample authentic dishes ranging from tacos al pastor to tamales and empanadas.

Community roots and purpose

Robert Ruiz, founder of Fiestas Patrias OKC, emphasized the event’s deeper meaning. “Our families, especially those who came from Mexico or other Latin American countries, keep their traditions alive,” Ruiz said. “We build an authentic celebration that anyone from Oklahoma—or even outside the state—can experience and understand what these traditions represent.”

Growth and local impact

Started 16 years ago as a modest showcase at the state fair, the festival now draws thousands of attendees each year, providing a boost to local vendors and small businesses. Food trucks, craft sellers and cultural organizations report increased exposure and sales, reinforcing the city’s reputation as a welcoming hub for diverse communities.

Schedule and amenities

The celebration runs until 11 p.m. tonight, with live performances scheduled throughout the evening. Attendees can park in nearby lots, and the venue is wheelchair‑accessible. Local law enforcement and fire services are on site to ensure a safe environment.

Looking ahead

Fiestas Patrias serves as the kickoff for a month‑long series of events across Oklahoma City, including educational workshops, community dialogues and additional cultural festivals. Organizers hope the month will foster greater understanding among Oklahoma’s many ethnic groups and highlight the contributions of Hispanic families to the city’s fabric.
