Fetterman’s support for Trump policies widens rift with Pennsylvania Democrats

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Two years after touring the Commonwealth to rally Democratic candidates, Sen. John Fetterman now finds himself largely shunned by the state’s Democratic establishment. His public support for several of President Trump’s priorities – from backing the administration’s border enforcement to endorsing the recent nomination of a Trump‑chosen federal judge – has created a stark divide within the party.

Polling shows a dramatic shift

A New York Times poll released in August indicates that only about two in ten registered Democrats in Pennsylvania view Fetterman favorably, a sharp reversal from the 74% positive rating recorded in 2024. By contrast, Republican voters now give him a 73% favorable rating, up from roughly 25% a few years ago, marking a clear upward trend among GOP constituents.

Democratic leaders voice frustration

Lori McFarland, chair of the Lehigh County Democratic Party, said, “I absolutely think that Fetterman would bring us more harm than good.” She added that local Democrats feel “betrayed” by his willingness to side with the President on issues such as immigration enforcement and the Israel‑Hamas conflict.

Democratic strategist J.J. Abbott echoed that sentiment, describing Fetterman’s behavior as “antagonizing Democrats, seemingly for pleasure.”

Fetterman defends his position

Despite the criticism, Fetterman insists he will not switch parties. In an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity, he said, “I’m not going to be a Republican, but I’m going to be a Democrat that’s going to have a conversation with whoever is playing it straight.” He highlighted his continued support for labor unions, LGBTQ rights and other issues traditionally championed by the left.

Alignment with Trump’s agenda

Fetterman has repeatedly voted with Republicans on key votes, including the 2023 budget shutdown resolution and several of President Trump’s judicial nominations. He also co‑hosted a joint fundraising committee with Republican Sen. David McCormick, an unusual bipartisan effort that underscores his willingness to work across the aisle when it aligns with his policy preferences.

Impact on future elections

The growing isolation raises questions about the 2028 Senate race. While Governor Josh Shapiro, a potential 2028 presidential contender, focuses on retaining a narrow House majority and flipping the state Senate, Democratic leaders are already looking at alternatives such as Reps. Chris Deluzio, Brendan Boyle and former Rep. Conor Lamb.

Deluzio told the Associated Press, “Pennsylvanians elected John Fetterman as a Democrat to the United States Senate. They expect him to be a Democrat in these two years he has left in this term.” He added that he will decide after the November elections whether to run for the Senate seat.

Senate leadership weighs options

Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R‑SD) said in July that Republicans have spoken with Fetterman about the challenges he faces within the Democratic caucus. “If he ever comes to the conclusion that he’s ready to move, we’d certainly welcome him,” Thune said.

Analysts note that a party switch by Fetterman could reset the Senate balance, potentially giving Republicans a majority and placing Vice President JD Vance in a tie‑breaking role.

Local perspective

State Rep. Peter Schweyer of Allentown admitted, “We assumed that when we got him there we were going to get somebody who’s going to fight for us. And what we got instead was somebody who just disappeared.” The sentiment reflects a broader frustration among Pennsylvania officials who say they have not seen the senator in several years, missing key events such as the funeral for three fallen police officers.

As the Commonwealth heads toward a pivotal election cycle, Fetterman’s future – both in the Senate and within his party – remains uncertain, while his alignment with President Trump’s agenda continues to shape his political fortunes.
