Festivals and Farewells: Weekend Events in Western Washington

As May draws to a close, Western Washington is bustling with events that celebrate culture, community, and conservation. From Mason County to Seattle, residents have a variety of activities to choose from this weekend.

Legends of the Timber

The annual Forest Festival in Mason County, known as ‘Timber Town,’ runs from May 28-31. This four-day event honors the region’s logging heritage with a carnival, fun run, pancake breakfast, parade, and logging show. The festival culminates in a fireworks display, offering fun for the whole family.

Farewell to Ume

Visitors to Tacoma’s Point Defiance Zoo have one last chance to see Ume, a Malayan tapir, before she relocates to a Midwest zoo in early June. Born at the zoo in February 2025, Ume’s move is part of a species survival plan aimed at preserving the endangered Malayan tapir.

Seattle Asian American Film Festival

The 14th annual Seattle Asian American Film Festival takes place from May 29-31 at the Wing Luke Museum and Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute. This year’s theme, ‘Fate/Interconnectedness in the Asian diaspora,’ explores the diverse experiences of Asian Americans through film. Attendees can find ticket information and a full schedule online.

Kent International Festival

On May 30, the 18th annual Kent International Festival will be held at the accesso ShoWare Center. This event celebrates global cultures with dance performances, art displays, and a variety of cuisines from local vendors and food trucks.

Black Graduation

Wa Na Wari, in partnership with the Northwest African American Museum, hosts the inaugural Black Graduation event on May 30-31 in Seattle’s Central District. This cultural gathering celebrates Black artists with an art fair, live music, and speeches focusing on themes of lineage and emergence.
