Fervo Energy signs 396‑MW geothermal power deal with Google, boosting Utah clean‑energy profile

Utah’s renewable‑energy landscape received a major boost on Tuesday when Fervo Energy disclosed a new power‑purchase agreement with Alphabet’s Google. The deal will see 396 megawatts of geothermal electricity generated at the Cape Station project flow to Google’s data‑center operations, marking a significant step toward round‑the‑clock clean power for the tech giant.

Details of the agreement

The contract gives Google the right to increase its purchases by an additional 600 megawatts, potentially bringing the total capacity under the arrangement to almost one gigawatt by June 2030. Fervo said the expanded option reflects both the company’s confidence in the scalability of its enhanced geothermal technology and Google’s growing appetite for reliable, carbon‑free energy.

Background and prior collaborations

Fervo’s partnership with Google is not new. In 2024 the two firms, together with Nevada utility NV Energy, signed a 115‑megawatt power‑purchase agreement that helped add more geothermal generation to Nevada’s grid. Their collaboration began with Project Red, a geothermal pilot in Nevada that entered service in 2023, demonstrating the viability of the technology for large‑scale power users.

Why geothermal matters for data centers

Data centers are among the fastest‑growing electricity consumers in the United States. Their need for constant, reliable power makes them ideal candidates for baseload renewable sources like geothermal, which can produce electricity 24 hours a day regardless of weather conditions. By securing a long‑term supply from Fervo, Google is positioning itself to meet its sustainability goals while ensuring uninterrupted service for its customers.

Impact on Utah’s economy

The Cape Station project, slated to begin operations in 2028, is expected to create a range of jobs during construction and ongoing plant operation. Local contractors, engineers, and service providers stand to benefit from the influx of capital and the demand for specialized skills associated with enhanced geothermal systems.

Market reaction

Following the announcement, Fervo’s shares rose nearly 14 percent in pre‑market trading, signaling investor confidence in the company’s growth trajectory and the broader market’s appetite for clean‑energy infrastructure projects.

Looking ahead

As the United States continues to grapple with rising electricity demand and the need to decarbonize its power grid, agreements like the one between Fervo and Google illustrate a path forward. By leveraging Utah’s abundant geothermal resources, the partnership not only supports a major technology company’s energy needs but also underscores the state’s emerging role as a hub for innovative, low‑carbon power generation.
