A coordinated ‘takedown’ by the U.S. Department of Justice has targeted $6.7 billion in alleged healthcare fraud, with charges brought against 455 defendants, including doctors and other licensed health professionals, for their alleged participation in healthcare fraud and opioid abuse schemes.

In New Mexico, First Assistant U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison and New Mexico Attorney General Raul Torrez announced the filing of a federal civil forfeiture complaint to recoup more than $2 million in proceeds from a scheme to defraud Medicaid. The complaint alleges that Safeway Medical Transportation LLC, a New Mexico non-emergency medical transportation company, fraudulently billed the New Mexico Medicaid program for transportation services.
The action is part of the U.S. Department of Justice’s 2026 National Health Care Fraud Takedown, which has seized over $182 million in cash, luxury vehicles, jewelry, and other assets. The takedown has also pledged ‘full spectrum accountability for all criminal actors from doctor’s offices to corporate boardrooms.’
