FDA greenlights updated COVID‑19 shots for seniors and high‑risk Americans

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced Wednesday that it has approved updated COVID‑19 vaccines for a broad segment of the population. The decision follows the Trump administration’s shift toward a more targeted vaccination strategy, urging individuals to consult their healthcare providers before receiving a dose.

Approved vaccines and who can receive them

Pfizer‑BioNTech received clearance for its mRNA vaccine for all adults 65 and older, as well as anyone ages 5‑64 who has a health condition that increases the risk of severe illness. The formulation is designed to combat the LP.8.1 strain of the coronavirus.

Moderna’s two mRNA products were also approved. Spikevax is authorized for people from six months through 64 who have an underlying condition, and for everyone 65 and older. mNexspike is cleared for ages 12‑64 with an underlying condition and for all seniors. Both target the XFG subvariant of the JN.1 strain.

Novavax’s protein‑based vaccine, Nuvaxovid, gained approval for adults 65 and older and for those ages 12‑64 with qualifying health issues. This product targets the JN.1 strain.

Health conditions that qualify

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists several conditions that raise the risk of severe COVID‑19, including asthma, heart, kidney, liver or lung disease, diabetes, obesity, and pregnancy. Individuals with any of these conditions are encouraged to discuss vaccination with their doctors.

What the administration is doing

Under President Trump’s leadership, the federal government has moved away from a universal recommendation toward a more personalized approach. The administration emphasizes that every American 6 months and older should speak with a trusted healthcare professional before deciding on vaccination.

In May, the FDA’s independent vaccine advisory committee voted to recommend the XFG subvariant as the target for this year’s shots. While the CDC has not yet issued a formal recommendation, most medical societies support the updated vaccines, and insurers have confirmed they will continue to cover the cost.

When and where to get the shots

Pharmacies and doctors’ offices are expected to begin offering the new formulations in September. The rollout will be coordinated nationally, with local providers preparing to administer the doses to eligible patients.

Current COVID‑19 trends

National case numbers remain relatively low, and hospitalizations and deaths are not climbing dramatically. However, the CDC reports that the test positivity rate for the week ending August 15 approached 5%, the highest level since early February, with increases observed in every state.

Sequencing data shows that the XFG.1.1 subvariant has become the predominant strain as of early July, underscoring the importance of the updated vaccines in maintaining community health.
