The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has added bemotrizinol to the list of permitted sunscreen active ingredients, the agency announced on Tuesday, June 9.
What is Bemotrizinol?
Bemotrizinol has been used safely in Europe for decades and protects against both ultraviolet A and B rays with low levels of absorption through the skin into the body. The agency considers the ingredient to be safe for use in sunscreens by adults and children six months and older.
Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. stated that “Bemotrizinol has been used safely in Europe for decades, and FDA’s action will increase competition and consumer confidence in sunscreen products.”
