The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is working to ensure the safety of the 2028 LA Olympics, following a successful FIFA World Cup event that saw over 6.8 million visitors across the country. According to Assistant Director Patrick Grandy, the FBI conducted over 300,000 background investigations on players, coaches, and other accredited personnel who attended and worked at the FIFA games.

Drone Concerns

The FBI also intercepted and seized some 700 drones across the country during the World Cup, with Grandy warning that drone operators who fly in no-fly zones will face fines of up to $100,000. The FBI remains concerned that drones could be used as a tool for lone-wolf attacks.

In addition to drone concerns, the FBI also arrested 80 human traffickers and rescued 33 minors from sex trafficking rings during the World Cup. The FBI Intelligence Center served as a hub for 400 law enforcement agencies from dozens of participating countries, providing investigators with an average of about 26 leads to follow up each day.

Preparing for the Olympics

With the 2028 LA Olympics on the horizon, the FBI is working closely with its federal, state, and international partners to prepare for the event. Grandy expressed confidence in the FBI’s ability to showcase the city of Los Angeles and the Greater Los Angeles area, despite concerns about the Los Angeles Police Department’s staffing levels.
