FAU Owls Refocus on Navy Home Opener After 45‑Point Defeat to Gators

The Florida Atlantic Owls are turning the page on a disappointing 45‑point loss to the Florida Gators. Coach Zach Kittley told players on Sunday night that dwelling on the defeat would not help the team: “You can’t just sit here, sulk, and mourn. You are not going to get that from me.” The Owls now shift their focus to their home opener against the Navy Midshipmen on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Emphasis on Physicality

Practices this week have centered on increasing toughness, especially on defense. Linebacker Joseph Sipp Jr. explained the new emphasis: “The biggest thing is being the more physical team and making more tackles. We had a physical practice today and another one tomorrow.” The coaching staff hopes the added intensity will translate into more stops and fewer big plays by opponents.

Call for Community Support

Kittley appealed directly to the Boca Raton community, urging students and local residents to create a true home‑field advantage. “We need people loud and supporting their hometown team. I need the students here supporting the guys. Hey, Miami plays Thursday night, so come on up and watch us in the fall Saturday night,” he said. The Owls hope a packed stadium will energize the squad and help reverse the momentum from the Gators’ blowout.

Historical Context

Navy has won the three previous matchups between the two programs, giving the Midshipmen a slight edge in the series. However, FAU’s recent offensive upgrades and a revamped defensive approach could make the contest more competitive than past meetings suggest.

What Fans Can Expect

The Owls will look to improve ball security, increase tackle counts, and execute a more disciplined game plan. Defensive coordinator adjustments aim to limit big gains, while the offense will focus on a balanced attack that leverages the team’s speed and depth. If the Owls can translate practice intensity into game‑day performance, they could keep the game close and potentially pull off an upset.

Game Details

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday at FAU Stadium. Tickets are available online and at the stadium box office. Fans are encouraged to arrive early to secure seating and help generate the loud, supportive atmosphere the coaching staff believes is essential for a successful home debut.

FAU’s next challenge after the Navy game will be a conference matchup that could determine bowl eligibility. The Owls’ ability to rebound from the Gators’ loss will be a key storyline as the season progresses.
