FAU Owls dominate Navy 38-30 in home opener as Caden Veltkamp throws five TDs

Florida Atlantic University celebrated a thrilling home‑opener on Saturday night as the Owls defeated Navy 38-30 at Schnellenberger Field. Quarterback Caden Veltkamp was the star of the show, delivering a career‑high five touchdown passes and completing 27 of 33 attempts for 386 yards.

Veltkamp’s record‑setting performance

Veltkamp’s first‑half barrage set the tone early. He connected with wide receiver Easton Messer twice, including a spectacular 76‑yard strike in the opening quarter. The duo added two more touchdowns of 36 and 30 yards, while Veltkamp also found the end zone on a 13‑yard pass. A fifth score, a short 5‑yard pass in the third quarter, capped his five‑touchdown haul.

Messers’ effort was equally impressive, finishing with eight receptions for 179 yards. Fellow receiver Kelby Valsin contributed eight catches for 115 yards and a touchdown, and Dom Henry added another score, giving the Owls a balanced aerial attack.

Owls build a commanding lead

FAU surged ahead early, leading 31-7 at halftime. The Owls extended the margin to 38-14 after a school‑record 60‑yard field goal by Collin Rogers as the half closed. Antonio Johnson’s touchdown catch in the third quarter pushed the lead to 45-14 before Navy began its comeback.

Despite Navy’s late surge – a 64‑yard touchdown pass from Jackson Gutierrez to Charles Robinson and a 49‑yard touchdown run by Gutierrez in the fourth quarter – the Owls held firm. Navy added a safety and a two‑point conversion, narrowing the gap, but FAU’s defense forced a turnover on downs on Navy’s final possession.

Statistical highlights

  • FAU outgained Navy 428‑393 in total yards.
  • Time of possession favored the Owls, 33:48 to 26:12.
  • FAU’s defense forced a crucial turnover on downs late in the game.
  • This marks the first time in seven years the Owls defeated a team that received votes in the Associated Press Top 25 poll.

The victory not only gives FAU momentum heading into the rest of the season but also underscores the growing strength of the program under head coach Willie Taggart. The Owls will look to build on this performance as they face a challenging conference schedule.

Looking ahead

FAU’s next matchup is slated for next Saturday against conference rival UCF, a game that will test the Owls’ consistency and depth. Fans can expect Veltkamp to continue leading the offense, while the defensive unit aims to replicate the stout play that secured the win over Navy.
