Jaheim Merriweather scores three touchdowns as Troy Trojans dominate Alabama State 34-17

In a commanding performance on Saturday, Troy University’s football team rolled past Alabama State University 34-17, thanks in large part to a standout showing by running back Jaheim Merriweather. Merriweather rushed for 127 yards and found the end zone three times, including a spectacular 69‑yard dash that set the tone early in the game.

First‑half fireworks

The Trojans exploded out of the gate, amassing 314 total yards before the halftime whistle. A 73‑yard pass from quarterback Goose Crowder to TK Keyes opened the scoring, and Merriweather followed with touchdown runs of 69, 6 and 1 yard. Troy’s offense was efficient, scoring on five of six possessions and establishing a 31‑7 lead at the break.

Alabama State’s comeback attempt

The Hornets tried to claw back in the second half. Quarterback Andrew Body connected with John Austin on a 19‑yard touchdown pass, and kicker Andrew Abu‑Akell added a 37‑yard field goal, narrowing the gap to 31‑17. Both scoring drives began on Troy’s side of the 50‑yard line, underscoring the Trojans’ defensive resilience.

Final stretch and key statistics

Late in the fourth quarter, kicker Ethan Head sealed the win with a 47‑yard field goal, bringing the final tally to 34‑17. Alabama State’s final drive stalled at the Troy 32‑yard line, ending any hopes of a late rally.

For Troy, Crowder completed 14 of 27 passes for 201 yards, while Keyes hauled in five receptions for 119 yards. The Trojans improve to 2‑0 on the season. Alabama State’s offense was limited to 105 passing yards, and running back Jamarie Hostzclaw contributed 80 rushing yards, including a 50‑yard sprint for the Hornets’ first score.

Historical context and upcoming games

This matchup marked the 17th meeting between the two programs, a rivalry that dates back over a century. Troy now leads the series 15‑2, with only four contests occurring since the turn of the century. Looking ahead, the Trojans travel to face No. 23 Missouri, while Alabama State will host Mississippi Valley State on September 26.

The victory reinforces Troy’s early‑season momentum and showcases the depth of its offensive weapons. Fans can look forward to a challenging road test against a ranked Missouri squad, while the Hornets will aim to rebound in their next outing.
