FAU and FIU set to clash in Shula Bowl rivalry this Saturday

College football fans in South Florida have another reason to gather this weekend. Florida Atlantic University (FAU) and Florida International University (FIU) will face off in the Shula Bowl on Saturday at 6 p.m., a rivalry that has become a staple of the region’s sports calendar.

History and stakes

The two programs have met dozens of times, with the Owls holding a 17‑5 advantage overall. Last season, however, the Panthers broke that streak and captured the trophy, leaving FAU eager to reclaim it on its home turf in Boca Raton.

“They kicked our tail. We got out‑coached and out‑played and we have to do everything in our power to get that trophy back here in Boca,” FAU head coach Zach Kittley said in a pre‑game interview.

Player perspective

For former South Florida native Gavench Marcelin, the rivalry carries personal meaning. Marcelin, who played in the Shula Bowl as a freshman and helped his team win, explained how the game influences campus spirit.

“Being in the game twice—winning it freshman year— I saw how it affects the university, the students and the team outlook afterwards,” he said.

FAU’s recent form

FAU entered the matchup after a strong showing against Navy, where the Owls built a 31‑point lead before holding on for a 38‑30 victory. While the win demonstrated offensive firepower, Coach Kittley cautioned against letting the result inflate the team’s confidence.

“We have not arrived yet. I expected us to beat Navy, so it wasn’t a shock to me or anyone in the locker room. It was not a shock to us but we haven’t arrived yet and we can’t get complacent,” Kittley added.

Game details

The Shula Bowl will kick off at 6 p.m. Saturday at Flagler Credit Union Stadium, located on FAU’s campus in Boca Raton. Tickets are available through the schools’ athletic departments and local vendors.

Both squads view the game as a chance to set the tone for the remainder of the season. FIU hopes to defend its recent triumph, while FAU aims to re‑establish its dominance in the rivalry.

Community impact

The rivalry draws alumni, students, and local residents, providing a boost to the Boca Raton economy as fans fill restaurants, hotels, and retail outlets before and after the game. The event also reinforces the sense of community pride that college athletics can foster in South Florida.

As kickoff approaches, the focus remains on disciplined play, strong fundamentals, and the desire to bring the Shula Bowl trophy back to the Owls’ side of the field.
