A man was killed Friday morning after he was struck by a southbound Tri-Rail train near Lake Worth Road, according to transportation officials.

The crash happened at 7:41 a.m. when the train struck a trespasser on the tracks, the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority said.

Service was delayed for about 30 minutes following the incident, officials said. However, passengers who were on the train said they remained at the Lake Worth station until shortly after 10 a.m.

Riders described the scene as traumatic. “I look out the window and kind of seeing everybody kind of gasping, looking to the back of the train,” one passenger said.

Passengers said they did not feel a collision or sudden braking before the train stopped. Instead, they said it seemed like a normal stop until the conductor made an announcement about 15 minutes later.

During the investigation, one eastbound lane in the area was closed. Transportation officials also set up a bus bridge to Boynton Beach to help reduce delays for riders.

“It’s a little traumatic,” one passenger said. “Anybody who loses their life, it’s always a devastating situation.”
