Fans upset as Ed Sheeran concert drops opening acts amid protest concerns

Philadelphia residents who purchased tickets for Ed Sheeran’s upcoming show at Lincoln Financial Field are facing a sudden change to the event lineup. Less than 24 hours before the concert, the tour promoter announced that all opening acts, including rapper Macklemore and Danish band Lukas Graham, have been removed.

Why the lineup was altered

The decision follows Macklemore’s “Free Palestine” remarks made while opening for Sheeran at MetLife Stadium earlier this month. In response, stadium owner Robert Kraft publicly barred the rapper from performing at Gillette Stadium, and six additional venue owners, including the operators of Lincoln Financial Field, followed suit.

Sheeran released a statement saying the tour promoter made the removal decision. He added, “I am appalled by the conflict between Israel and Palestine, I am not complicit. I have my personal views on this devastating conflict.” The statement underscores the tour’s effort to avoid further controversy.

Fans react to ticket price drop

TicketData.com reports that resale prices have fallen more than 50% this week, prompting many fans to attempt ticket sales on secondary markets. Nicole Tedesco of Pittston expressed disappointment, saying, “You want the whole experience.” She had been looking forward to seeing Macklemore and Lukas Graham before the changes.

Safety concerns and planned protests

Pro‑Palestine groups have announced plans to protest outside the stadium on concert day. The prospect of large demonstrations has raised safety worries for attendees, particularly those with mobility challenges. Caitlin Smith of Hatboro, who uses a power wheelchair, said she will stay home, noting the difficulty of navigating the city and stadium area in a wheelchair amid potential crowds.

“The Ed Sheeran song ‘Perfect’ was our wedding song,” Smith said. “Our ultimate dream would have been to meet him, but going to this concert was essentially the next best thing. Because of everything being so unsure, it kinda sucks.”

Refunds and ticketing confusion

Refunds have become a major concern. Some fans report receiving refunds through Ticketmaster, while others, like Smith, have been unable to get money back from StubHub. Ticketmaster told Action News that refund policies are set by the event organizer, Messina Touring Group, but the group has not responded to inquiries about the current situation.

Philadelphia police have indicated they will adjust staffing levels to maintain safety, but the uncertainty surrounding the protest and the altered concert experience has left many ticket holders hesitant to attend.

What’s next for concertgoers

Fans who still wish to attend the concert should monitor official channels for any further updates on security measures or potential changes to the start time, which has already been pushed from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Those seeking refunds are advised to contact their ticket vendor directly and keep records of all communications.

The situation highlights how quickly political statements can ripple into the entertainment world, affecting local fans, businesses, and the broader community.
