Family’s Plea for Justice

Ruiz’s family, including his 13-year-old daughter Kah’liyah Aliomar, held an emotional news conference with civil rights attorney Ben Crump. Crump stated that the officer should face criminal charges, calling the shooting an “unjustified execution.” Aliomar expressed her heartbreak, saying, “My heart was broken and hurt so much knowing I can’t see my father anymore.” Ruiz’s mother, Elsa Ruiz, also spoke, saying her son did not deserve to be taken from her.

The shooting was captured on cellphone video, which has been widely shared online. However, Madison Police Chief John Patterson cautioned that the video does not show the altercation from the police officers’ perspective. The city of Madison does not require its police to use body-worn cameras, which has been a point of debate among local officials and community groups.

Investigation Underway

A Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation probe is underway, and the city’s independent police monitor is also conducting a separate investigation. Police say Ruiz pulled a knife during a struggle with four officers, injuring one of them. The officer who fired the shots has not been identified.

The killing has sparked protests and calls for justice from elected officials. The family has promised to seek justice for Ruiz’s death, which they believe was unjustified. Crump emphasized the need for accountability, saying, “Anytime there is excessive use of force, there should be accountability.”
