A family on a fishing trip in Dunbeath, Scotland, sailed into a massive swarm of moon jellyfish. Daniel Macleod, 37, had taken his twin boys out on their small boat when they encountered the dense, thick mass of jellyfish.
A Bizarre Encounter
According to Daniel, the jellyfish were swarming around Dunbeath Bay, creating a ‘carpet’ of jellyfish. He said, ‘My sons were very excited – they’ve seen jellyfish when we’ve been out before, but normally just an odd one or two.’ The family was concerned about the potential effect the swarm might have on their boat, but they passed through with no issues.
The day’s fishing, however, was noticeably impacted. Daniel said, ‘We were okay with the boat, but there obviously is a worry there, because the boat does have to draw water from the sea to cool the engine down.’ He added that the fishing was ‘definitely harder’ than usual, and they didn’t catch as much as they normally would.
