A unique business has emerged, preserving pet crustaceans such as crabs, lobsters, and shrimp. Jason Philip, a 32-year-old crustacean taxidermist, has turned his hobby into a business, preserving cherished arthropods for their owners.
Preserving Cherished Pets
Philip’s journey into crustacean taxidermy began when he moved to a small fishing village in Northumberland four years ago. He found a large dead crab on the beach and decided to preserve it. After teaching himself the process, Philip started receiving orders from as far as Australia and the U.S.
Philip’s business, Amble Obscura, offers various preservation services, including open, glass dome, and framed displays, as well as crab claw earrings and necklace pendants. He charges between $180 and $390 to preserve the crustaceans, depending on the complexity of the process.
Philip’s work has helped people understand and appreciate the value of preserving crustaceans. He has received unique requests, including preserving a blue crayfish, a horseshoe crab, and a vampire crab. Philip’s work on a peacock mantis shrimp called Ludo, who had a social media account with millions of followers, even discovered teeth that the owner was not aware of.
