Britain’s families are beating the cost-of-living crisis by booking larger group properties, with multigenerational holidays up 20% and demand for large group properties surging 25%.
Derbyshire Leads the Way
Derbyshire is at the forefront of this trend, with tourism in the region generating a record £3.58 billion for the local economy in 2024. The region’s accessibility, with easy reach from Manchester, Sheffield, Birmingham, and London, makes it an ideal destination for families.
According to Derbyshire Group Cottages, a specialist in group accommodation, the trend is driven by the economics of sharing a large self-catering property. With the average UK staycation costing around £312 per trip, splitting the cost of a large property across 10, 12, or 15 guests dramatically undercuts the per-head cost of individual hotel rooms.
A Saga Holidays survey found that more than half of respondents who had taken a multigenerational holiday chose self-catering, citing the ability to live as a family unit rather than in separate rooms across different buildings.
