Fairview LDS temple vandalized twice during construction, mayor condemns

Fairview, Texas – The under‑construction temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter‑day Saints on East Stacy Road has been defaced twice in the past month. Police responded to a call on Sunday, Sept. 6, after a sign at the site was spray‑painted with the phrase “Trump is God” between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m.

Previous incident

Just weeks earlier, on Aug. 9, Fairview Police documented a separate act of vandalism when the same sign was marked with the slogan “MAGA.” The city’s surveillance footage captured the August incident, but the camera angle was too distant to identify the perpetrator.

Mayor’s response

Fairview Mayor John Hubbard issued a statement condemning the defacement without qualification. He emphasized that the dispute over the temple’s steeple height and lighting is a matter of planning, not faith, and that the community “does not support this kind of conduct.” Hubbard called on residents to voice support for their neighbors in the LDS congregation and to resolve disagreements through respectful, good‑faith dialogue.

Community context

The temple project received approval in Nov. 2025 after a growing LDS population in North Texas highlighted the need for a new house of worship. Some residents expressed concerns that the building’s height and illumination would be out of place in the residential area, but the city’s planning commission ultimately authorized the construction.

Investigation continues

Fairview Police continue to investigate both incidents. The cost to replace the vandalized sign is estimated at $300. Authorities have not yet identified a suspect, and the surveillance footage from the August incident remains insufficient for a positive ID.

Looking ahead

The temple’s construction proceeds, with the community watching closely. Local leaders stress that while disagreements over zoning and design are normal, acts of vandalism undermine the town’s tradition of neighborly respect and religious liberty. Residents are encouraged to report any further suspicious activity and to support the ongoing dialogue between the town and the LDS congregation.
