Fairfax County installs self‑service kiosks for personal property tax payments

Fairfax County officials announced the rollout of four self‑service tax payment kiosks, expanding convenient options for residents who owe personal property taxes—commonly known as the car tax. The new machines are located at government buildings in Fairfax, Alexandria, Reston and Annandale.

Convenient payment methods and extended hours

Each kiosk accepts cash, checks and credit cards, and can print receipts on demand. In addition to processing payments, the devices allow users to check their account balances, giving taxpayers a quick way to verify what they owe before making a payment.

Two of the kiosks, those in Reston and Annandale, are situated at government centers that share space with local police stations. Because of this arrangement, they are available 24 hours a day, providing round‑the‑clock access for residents who may work irregular hours or prefer to handle tax matters after business hours. The Fairfax and Alexandria kiosks operate during normal building hours, aligning with standard county office schedules.

Deadline and penalties

The county reminded motorists that personal property tax payments are due on October 5. Paying by the deadline avoids late fees and penalties, which can increase the amount owed. By offering multiple locations and flexible payment options, Fairfax County aims to reduce the number of missed deadlines and make compliance easier for families across the region.

Impact on the community

County leaders highlighted that the kiosks reflect a broader effort to modernize government services and improve accessibility for all residents. By placing the machines in both urban and suburban centers, the administration hopes to reach a diverse cross‑section of taxpayers, from long‑time homeowners to newer residents in growing areas like Reston.

Local businesses and community groups have welcomed the move, noting that easier tax payment options can free up time for families to focus on work, school and church activities. The initiative aligns with the county’s commitment to efficient, citizen‑focused service delivery.

How to use the kiosks

To use a kiosk, residents simply approach the screen, select the “Personal Property Tax” option, and follow the prompts to enter their account number or vehicle identification. After confirming the amount due, they can insert cash, write a check or swipe a credit card. Once the transaction is complete, the machine prints a receipt that serves as proof of payment.

For those who prefer traditional methods, the county continues to accept payments by mail, online through the official website, or in person at the Department of Tax Administration.

Fairfax County officials encourage anyone with questions about the new kiosks or personal property tax obligations to contact the Tax Administration office or visit the county’s website for detailed instructions.
