An F-16 fighter jet intercepted a civilian airplane that flew into restricted airspace over Hagerstown, Maryland, on Saturday afternoon, according to military officials.
Incident Details
The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) stated that the aircraft breached a VIP Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) in the region at around 12:20 p.m. ET. These restrictions act as temporary no-fly zones declared by the FAA.
After making contact with the civilian plane, the F-16 monitored the aircraft while it proceeded to land safely at a nearby airport. Following the incident, NORAD posted an update on social media urging aviators to “stay sharp” and verify airspace restrictions “before every flight.”
Importance of Airspace Restrictions
The FAA communicates these temporary rules to pilots using Notices to Airmen, or NOTAMs. These notices completely prohibit all unauthorized aircraft and drones from operating within the designated zone for a specific window of time.
The FAA warns that pilots who violate these rules “can face sanctions ranging from warnings or fines to certificate suspensions or revocations.” The agency notes that actual penalties vary depending on the unique circumstances of each situation.
