A tragic incident occurred in Katy, Texas, when a Tesla in Autopilot mode crashed into a home, resulting in the death of a 76-year-old woman, Martha Avila. The driver, Michael Butler, was using the car’s Autopilot feature at the time of the crash.

According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Department, Butler was traveling eastbound on a residential street when the vehicle left the roadway and crashed into the side of a house. Ring doorbell footage captured the vehicle crashing into the home at a high rate of speed.
Avila was transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead from her injuries. Butler was taken to the hospital and showed no signs of intoxication. He is cooperating with the investigation.
Tesla’s website notes that drivers are supposed to remain ready to drive, even when using Autopilot mode. The company states that Autopilot and Full Self-Driving Capability are intended for use with a fully attentive driver who has their hands on the wheel and is prepared to take over at any moment.
